En Octubre de 2008, Playa del Carmen fue sede de tuning del sureste Mexicano. El tuning o tuneo, en español, se refiere a la personalización del exterior e interior de un vehículo. Este fenómeno automovilístico es muestra de la originalidad, creatividad y estilo de cada propietario. Sin embargo, esta práctica no se limita únicamente a los automóviles, también se pueden ver paseando por las calles motocicletas, motonetas y bicicletas modificadas.
Actualmente, el tuning se considera alrededor del mundo como una moda cultural urbana, siendo los jóvenes los más interesados. En México, hay cientos de fanáticos del tuneo y cada año se organizan competencias que ponen a prueba el diseño, los colores, los dibujos, el rendimiento, las extensiones aerodinámicas e incluso el equipo de sonido de cada pieza modificada.
Today, tuning is considered as a worldwide cultural urban fashion, young people are the most interested. In Mexico, there are hundreds of tuning fans and every year many contest are carried out to test the design, colors, drawings, performance, aerodynamic extensions and even the sound equipment of each modified piece.
