”Un país sin cine es un país sin rostro”

“A country without cinema is a country without face”

Productora mexicana de series de televisión, cine y varios cortometrajes, egresada del Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos, CUEC, y con una trayectoria de más de 30 años, nos da su punto de vista sobre el cine Mexicano durante su visita a la Riviera Maya.

“… el cine mexicano está cada vez más alejado de su público. A pesar de que hoy existen los fondos federales que apoyan el cine, los cineastas tienen el afán de copiar lo producido en Hollywood y han dejado en el olvido los temas que realmente interesan al país. El público mexicano esta mal acostumbrado al cine “gringo” y nos olvidamos del cine Argentino, Chileno, Peruano, Colombiano; y en muchas ocasiones nosotros mismos no lo pedimos y seguimos creyendo que el americano es el mejor cine, obviamente hay buenas películas americanas pero también las hay aquí” comentó.

Patricia Coronado, Mexican producer of TV series, films and short films, graduated from the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos in México, CUEC, and with a carreer of more than 30 years, gives us her point of view about the Mexican film during her stay in the Riviera Maya.

"…. Mexican cinema is increasingly distant from its public. Although today there are the federal funds that support the cinema, the film directors’s main desire is to copy what Hollywood produces, forgetting the issues that really interest to the country.

“The Mexican public’s bad habit is to watch “gringo” cinema only. We forget about the Argentinean, Chilean, Peruvian, Colombian films and in many times ourselves do not request them and continue believing that the American is the best cinema, obviously there are good American movies but there are good ones here too” she commented.

¿Cómo defines al cine?

“El cine es arte colectivo, oficio e industria. Se define como arte colectivo porque se requiere de la participación de un buen equipo de trabajo; el director o el productor no ganan premios por si mismos, detrás de todo está un grupo de personas apoyando el proyecto. Oficio porque no cualquiera lo puede hacer, hay que tener talento y amor por el mismo cine. Finalmente, industria ya que se necesita de equipo, material, personal, etcétera, para producir, se generan gastos y ganancias, eso es industria”

What is your definition of cinema?

"The cinema is a collective art, occupation and industry. It is defined as a collective art because it is required of a good-work team; the director or the producer do not win prizes by themselves only, behind the scenes there is a group of people supporting the project. Occupation because not anyone can make it, it is necessary to have talent and love the cinema. Finally, industry since it is needed of equipment, material, personal, etc., to produce. Expenses and earnings are generated, and that is industry"

¿Consideras que las instituciones públicas y privadas han acertado su apoyo a la producción de cine y televisión mexicana?

Desafortunadamente los apoyos se han paternalizado. El Estado debe apoyar la cultura y entre ellos al cine; pero seamos sinceros, lo que realmente te mueve y motiva a producir algo son las muchas ganas de hacerlo. Se puede tener el apoyo del Estado o de alguna otra institución pero una buena idea es definitivamente obligación de los cineastas y los productores, a partir de entonces vienen los apoyos.

Do you consider that the public and private institutions have addressed right their support to the cinema production and Mexican television?

Unfortunately, the supports have been paternalized. The State have to support the culture, and the cinema is part of it; but lets be honest, what really motivates you to produce something is the desire of making it. You can have the support of the State or other institution but a good idea is definitively filmmakers’ and producers main duty, from then the supports come.

¿Qué opinas sobre los foros y festivales de cine?

Son importantes para las nuevas generaciones. Los jóvenes son el relevo. Estoy aquí porque creo en ellos y sé que pueden hacer mucho por el nuevo cine. Lo importante es que esos foros y festivales se conozcan, que la gente asista y vea el trabajo. Más que un foro o festival es una labor social porque se apoya lo que se produce en el país.

What do you think about the forums and film festivals?

They are pretty important for the new generations. The young people are the relief. I am here because I believe in them and I know that they can make a lot for the new cinema. The important thing is that those forums and festivals are known, that more people attend and see the work. More than a forum or festival, it is a social work because it supports what is produced in the country.

¿Consideras que estudiar cine sea una moda?

La gente debe estudiar cine por gusto no por moda. La gente, no solo de México sino que de todo el mundo, estudia cine porque es “la moda”, como ha sucedido con miles de carreras. El talento es la principal característica de esta actividad. Hoy en día, los estudiantes de cine y los cineastas solo quieren hablar de sucesos en el d.f. haciendo que estos siempre sean los mismos; se están olvidando del resto del país. Yo apoyo la idea de que cada estado de la república de a conocer a sus cineastas y que ellos a su vez produzcan cosas de su estado.

Do you think studying cinema is a fashion?

People should study cinema for pleasure not for fashion. People, not only in Mexico but all over the world, studies cinema because it is a fashion, which has happened to thousands of majors. Talent is the main characteristic of this activity. Today, film students and directors want to speak of events that happened in Mexico City only; having as a result the same topics; they are forgetting the rest of the country. I like the idea that each state of México promotes its filmmakers and they in return produce something about their state.

¿Cuál es el perfil de un buen actor?

El buen actor es aquel que puede transformarse e interpretar cualquier papel. El buen actor es multifacético y no se queda para siempre en un mismo personaje. La realidad es que tanto en la televisión como el cine siguen apareciendo los mismos actores y actrices; debemos hacer cambios que involucre a buenos actores para que la industria del entretenimiento deje de ser solo para los círculos de amigos.

“Un país sin cine es un país sin rostro. La mejor manera de conocer un país es mediante su cine…. Ante los ojos del mundo, México ha sido el país de charros y chinas poblanas porque ese fue nuestro cine” enfatizó Patricia Coronado.

Which is the profile of a good actor?

The good actor is who can transform him or herself and interpret any role. The good actor is versatile and does not stay forever in one character. The reality is that actors and actresses are always the same, as much in television as in films. We must make changes that involve good actors so that entertainment industry is no longer for groups of friends only.

"A country without cinema is a country without face. The best way to know a country is through its films…. Around the world, Mexico has been a country of charros and chinas poblanas because that was our cinema about” Patricia emphasized.
